How To Avoid Burnout When Working From Home

It’s okay to take it easy!

Just because you’re working from home, doesn’t mean you won’t experience burnout.

Working hours and hours on end in a typical office setting can leave you feeling physically, mentally, and emotionally drained. It’s the same if you overexert yourself when working remotely—you’re also prone to extreme exhaustion even though you’re in the comfort of your home.

It has finally come to light recently that work from home burnout is real and it’s actually more common now as millions of employees migrated from their office desks to a small corner in their houses. But just like other stress-related conditions, this type of burnout can be successfully managed.

Here are some tips you might find useful if you think you’re on the brink of getting burned out:

Figure out a routine that works for you—and stick to it!

If the sound of the word “routine” makes you yawn, it’s about time you brush off your presumptions about it because having a routine has been proven to be helpful in keeping one in check throughout the day.

Back when you used to work in an office, you actually (maybe, unconsciously) already followed a routine—from waking up early in the morning to beat the hellish traffic to hitting your bunk after catching the latest episode of your new favorite show.

But with your lengthy commute, brunch meetings, and company dinners out of the picture, figuring out a routine that works for you might be tricky at first, but try out various things that will give your day some sort of rhythm and you’ll eventually come up with a routine that you’ll stick to. Don’t forget to include showers, preparing meals, and, of course, self-care practices a.k.a. stuff you enjoy doing in your new routine!

Acknowledge your limits

Setting boundaries is crucial in maintaining a healthy mind and body at work, and it’s something you definitely have control over. If you’re overwhelmed by the number of tasks being piled on your plate, perhaps, it’s time to have a call with your direct superior and discuss with them what you can commit to as well as your reservations. Be truthful about your side and maintain a professional tone throughout the conversation.

Learn when to make a compromise

Once you’ve acknowledged your limits, you, too, should learn how to say no or make a compromise with your colleagues and superiors to ensure that your team is functioning effectively even during stressful times. Sure, saying no or suggesting a compromise is among the hardest things to do at work, especially if you’re young and new in the company, but it’s something you have to practice, and your co-workers will appreciate you for being honest with your situation.

Clock out

You’ve probably realized how easy it is to get carried away with work when you’re staying in one place the entire day. But overworking is not and never will be healthy! If you are required to work for eight hours in a day, do your best in those eight hours, but as much as possible, don’t go beyond that. If there’s a task that can be put off for tomorrow, do it tomorrow and, again, do your best to finish it. The same goes when it comes to replying to emails and text messages. Working from home involves a lot of time management, and you’re in control of it. Finding the right balance between work and rest will also improve your performance, as you’re more at ease with your mind and body.

File that leave!

Yes, it’s totally fine to take a vacation leave or two even if it means just staying in your house all day, binge-watching movies and series on Netflix while enjoying a tub of ice cream to yourself. Leave credits are benefits given to employees and you have all the right to use them however you wish. So go and take a break—you deserve it!
