Love Yourself More—It’s Okay, Here’s How
“Love yourself” has become a phrase that’s been thrown here and there so conveniently to promote much-needed self-love, but let’s get real here: It’s easier said than done.
Naturally, we find it easier to love others, so much so that we even tend to be a bit harsh towards ourselves. How many times have you given a friend a compliment to cheer them up on a bad day, when you heavily criticize yourself whenever you’re alone? We feel you, which is why we want to help you work on self-love.
Now, we know the thought of learning to love yourself might sound like a corny, lifelong process, but taking simple steps one day at a time will benefit you physically and mentally in more ways than one. Here’s how you can start:
Practice mindful gratitude
This is an easy activity that most people don’t do because of how hectic life can be, but practicing gratitude is among the easiest ways to learn how to love yourself. Begin by taking a few minutes after waking up in the morning to identify three things you’re grateful for and do it every day. Frequent gratitude makes you more aware of the good in yourself and in your life.
Acknowledge the fact that everyone you meet will have different views about you
Just as how you have your own impressions of other people, those you meet also have their own views about you—and that’s totally fine! You don’t have to please everyone to meet their expectations of you or to make them like you. Just go and embrace your authentic self!
Make peace with your past
To make mistakes is human, so forgive yourself for the mistakes you’ve made in your life. Take them as lessons learned and move on because what counts now is the present, which you deserve to enjoy and live to the fullest.
Stop comparing yourself to others
You’re not in a race against anyone in life. Everyone’s different and everyone moves in their own timeline—so do you! Don’t be discouraged by seeing other people around your age doing better than you at the moment. You are valuable in your own good way and you don’t have to compare yourself to others to see that. Instead, try to compare who you are today versus your old self. For sure, doing so will make you realize how far you’ve come. It might even motivate you to learn new things and make a better version of yourself! Always be grateful for what you have and put your best foot forward for what you have yet to achieve.
Cut ties with toxic people
Being with toxic people can blur the good that you should see in yourself and make you feel unworthy. You don’t need that negativity in your life! Nobody has the right to make you feel bad about who you are, Cut them out and, instead, surround yourself with loving people who genuinely care for you and relish in your company.
Know your strengths and put them to good use
We’re pretty sure there’s something you’re incredibly good at. You know it, too, but maybe, you’ve been too hard on yourself to admit it. Whether you’ve got a proclivity for art or a passionate heart for volunteerism, don’t take these good qualities for granted and do something enjoyable with them! Who knows? You might also inspire others to do the same!
Prioritize having fun
This is, perhaps, another way to say “treat yourself.” For the longest time, the idea of having fun has been labeled more like a want, but it’s actually a need! We all could use a little fun in our lives to keep going. So, as often as you could, give yourself something fun and exciting to look forward to. It doesn’t have to be grand—a nice me-time doing whatever you wish to do would be perfect!
